What are SAE socket weld elbow flanges?

SAE Socket Weld Elbow Flanges are one of the popular type of SAE socket weld flanges. The elbow is usually 90°. So they are known as SAE 90° Flanges as well.

Materials of SAE Socket Weld Elbow Flanges:

  • Carbon steel SAE 90° Flanges: C45, C20, CQ235, or on requests.
  • Stainless steel SAE 90° Flanges: 304, 316, 316L, 316Ti or equivalent EN/DIN stainless steel grades 1.4301, 1.4401, 1.4404, 1.4571, used for connecting stainless steel hydraulic tubing.

Main series & Size Range of SAE Socket Weld Elbow Flanges:

SAE 90° Flanges come in two varieties, and here below is the size range of each variety:

  • for 3000 PSI Standard Pressure Series: 1/2″ (DN13) to 3″
  • for 6000 PSI High Pressure Series: 1/2″ (DN13) to 2″ (DN51)

3000 PSI series also is known as code 61 SAE flanges, while 6000 psi high pressure series is known as code 62 SAE flanges.

Surface of SAE Socket Weld Elbow Flanges:

Carbon steel socket weld elbow flanges are usually supplied in surface condition as below:

  • Zinc coated (white)
  • Galvanized zinc (yellow)
  • Phosphated (black)
  • Nickle plated
  • Blank + oiled
  • Untreated oxidation
  • Blank

Working Pressure of SAE Socket Weld Elbow Flanges:

  • 3000 psi standard series: 35 bar to 350 bar
  • 6000 psi high pressure series: up to 420 bar.

The working pressure is also determined by the sizes of the SAE socket weld elbow flange, and the grade (10.9 or 8.8) of the bolts used.

What are SAE blind flanges?

SAE blind flanges are known as SAE blanking flanges also, there is no hole in the middle of the flange. SAE blind flanges are used to close and seal the hydraulic pipe end.

Main series of SAE blind Flanges:

  • 3000 psi standard pressure series according to ISO 6162-1
  • 6000 psi high pressure series according to ISO 6162-2

Both the above series of SAE blind flanges are conformed to SAE J518C.

Materials of SAE blind Flanges:

  • Carbon steel: S355J0 / C45 or equivalent, other steel grades on request.
  • Stainless steel: 304, 316, 316L, 316Ti; EN/DIN steel grades 1.4301, 1.4401, 1.4404, 1.4571.

Size Range of SAE blind Flanges:

  • 3000 psi standard pressure series (code 61): 1/2″ to 5″
  • 6000 psi high pressure series (code 62): 1/2″ to 3″

Working Pressure of SAE blind Flanges:

For 3000 psi standard pressure series, the working pressure is 35- 350 bar, while for 6000 psi high pressure series, the working pressure could be up to 400 bar. The actual max. working pressure of SAE flanges depends on the strength of the bolts used, and also depends on the wall thickness and quality of the tubes used, we recommend our customers use Younglee’s hydraulic tubing for high pressure applications, because of its advantages of accuracy dimensions, suitable hardness and high pressure resistance.

What are SAE butt weld flanges?

SAE Butt Weld Flange ( or SAE Butt Weld On Flange) is one of the main types of SAE weld flanges, which is widely used in hydraulic systems in various industries.

Younglee’s flange factory is one of the first class quality China manufacture of SAE Flanges which including SAE weld flanges.

Main series of SAE Butt Weld Flanges:

SAE butt weld flanges are divided into two series according to designed standard and working pressure as below, which are used for different pressure rating hydraulic tubing connectors.

  • 3000 PSI standard pressure series according to ISO 6162-1, also known as code 61 flanges
  • 6000 PSI high pressure series according to ISO 6162-2, also known as code 62 butt weld flanges

Both of the above series are conformed to standard SAE J518C also.

Temperature Range, pressure rating and working pressure of SAE hydraulic flange

There are mainly two different pressure ratings for the SAE hydraulic flanges as below.

Working Pressure: The standard pressure ranges from 34 to 345 bar for code 61 (3000 series) and 200 to 414 bar for code 62 (6000 series). Please take note that the pressure information of the flange and connected equipment combinations may vary from each other. For example: if a pipe connected to the flange has a lower working pressure, it will result in an overall lower working pressure of the system. Therefore, please consider the lowest pressure as the maximum working pressure of this combination.

Pressure rating:

  • Standard pressure series SAE class 3000 flanges: pressure rating 3000 psi with working pressure between 35 bar to 350 bar.
  • High pressure series SAE class 6000 flanges: pressure rating 6000 psi with working pressure maximum 400 bar.

Temperature Range: The standard working pressure of carbon steel SAE flanges is between -40°C and +120°C. For stainless steel, the standard working pressure is between -60°C and +50°C. Working Pressure for SAE Flanges made from stainless steel and used at elevated temperatures have to be:

  • Reduced by 4%: +50°C to < +100°C
  • Reduced by 11%: +100°C to < +200°C
  • Reduced by 20%: +200°C to < +250°C

Advantages of SAE Flanges:

SAE Flanges / hydraulic SAE Flanges have below advantages:

  • High pressure resistance: 6000 psi SAE Flanges/code 62 flanges can be used under working pressure upto 400 bar(6000psi).
  • Precision dimensions
  • Low cost

Applications of SAE code 61 / code 62 flanges:

As one of the most safety and leak free connect solutions for pipes and tubes, SAE flanges are widely used in pipe and tube systems for pumps and oil-dynamic applications in many industries such as mining, shipbuilding, paper processing, machinery manufacturing, building machinery and so on. Especially suitable for using in hydraulic systems, so they are well known as hydraulic flanges.

  • Industrial Hydraulics
    • Injection Moulding Machinery
    • Aluminium Die-Casting Machinery
    • Sintering Machinery
    • Steel Mills
    • Shipyard
    • Hydraulic Presses
    • Paper Processing
  • Mobile Hydraulics
    • Building Machinery
    • Agricultural Machinery
    • Forestry Machinery
    • Lifting and Material Handling Equipment

How does the SAE flange work?

The whole set includes flat side flange and o-ring side flange. The o-ring side flange contains a groove seat for the rubber o-ring (usually made of NBR material). The entire device forms a seal between the plane and the o-ring, and the o-ring is fixed in the concave circular groove of the other half. Tighten the bolt to pull the two halves together and compress the O-ring. Due to the use of o-rings, flanges with o-rings have an advantage over metal-to-metal flanges because all metal flanges are more prone to leakage because they must be tightened to a higher but narrower torque range. This makes it easier for metal-to-metal flanges to peel off the threads or crack. According to the recommended torque, tighten the complete flange with socket head screws and spring washers. The screw length is usually shorter than the total length of the SAE flange, but according to the SAE J518 standard, this is normal. In addition, according to SAE J518, there is no requirement for a hex nut for a fixed flange.
